Artificial flowers or cut flowers: which costs more over a year?

If you want flowers in the room all year round, you keep buying more. Again and again. This article works out how often that actually is and what follows from it, without blanket promises, because the answer depends more on your habits than on the price of the flowers.
Vase life is the starting point
Even when well looked after, cut flowers last seven to fourteen days. For tulips, five to seven days is realistic, and peonies last a similarly short time. Chrysanthemums and carnations manage more.
So if you want a fresh bouquet on display all the time, depending on the variety you end up at around 26 to 50 bouquets a year, and throw away just as many, usually two days after they stopped looking good.
What Germany spends on it
To put the overall size of this item into perspective: in Germany, around 8.6 billion euros a year is spent on flowers and plants, a good third of it on cut flowers. Per head, that works out at about 108 euros a year.
That is an average across everyone, including those who never buy flowers. Anyone who buys regularly is well above it.
When the switch pays off
This is where it gets uncomfortably concrete, and that is exactly why it is here: it depends entirely on how often you would restock.
- If you pick up a fresh bouquet every two weeks, you get to around 26 bouquets a year. There, a permanent arrangement quickly comes out ahead.
- If you buy a bouquet twice a year, artificial flowers save you little or nothing.
- If you want to permanently dress a particular corner where there never was a fresh bouquet anyway, you are not comparing with cut flowers at all, but with “empty”.
Blanket savings promises would not be credible at this point, which is why you won't find any here. The reliable calculation is your own: add up your last five bouquets. Usually the question afterwards is no longer whether it is worth it, but from when.
What actually limits how long they last
Artificial flowers don't wilt and, with normal indoor use, keep their shape for a long time. The limit is not set by time but by two other things:
- Dust. It is the only real adversary in everyday life. Dust every two to four weeks, clean more thoroughly with lukewarm water twice a year and let them air-dry. That is all the care they need.
- Direct sun. Constant full midday sun fades colours over time. Placed somewhat more sheltered, they stay fresh noticeably longer.
Bloomli deliberately gives no number of years here. A promise such as “lasts twelve months” would be a statement about the product's characteristics that depends on where it stands and that nobody can seriously give for every home.
The point where the calculation tips
There is one condition under which the comparison doesn't add up, and it is not a question of price: artificial flowers only pay off if they actually stay put. If you change your decor every six months because the colour no longer fits, you have neither saved nor gained anything.
This leads to a practical recommendation that Bloomli would rather give than a savings figure: choose understated, muted tones rather than a very fashionable colour. Cream, white, muted pink and plenty of green survive a change of interior; a loud trend bouquet becomes the odd one out after a single season.
Where real flowers remain the better choice
- When the scent is part of it: no calculation can replace that.
- As a gift, where it is precisely the transience that makes the gesture.
- When you enjoy watching the flowers open over the days.
- With local, seasonal flowers: tulips from the field next door in spring are a completely different calculation from roses in winter.
Many people combine both: permanent arrangements for corners and shelves, plus the occasional fresh bouquet on the dining table.
