With real hydrangeas, the soil decides the colour: only in acidic soil containing aluminium do the flowers turn blue; otherwise they stay pink. The name comes from Greek, hydor for water and angeion for vessel, because the seed capsules resemble small jugs. These stems stay blue, no matter where they stand.
