Nice to know
Phoenix is the botanical name of the date palms. The Canary Island date palm lines seaside promenades around the Mediterranean and stands in tubs on many terraces. Its relative, the true date palm, has been cultivated in the Middle East and North Africa for thousands of years; the dates in the supermarket come from it. The genus name goes back to the Greek word for palm, which also refers to the phoenix bird.
