Sansevieria goes by many names: bowstring hemp, because bowstrings and ropes were once twisted from the fibres of its leaves, and mother-in-law's tongue in everyday speech because of its pointed, sharp-edged leaves. Botanists have since placed the genus with the dragon trees, and today it is called Dracaena trifasciata, but in the trade the old name has stuck.
