Caladiums have been bred since the 19th century, and the varieties with white and pink leaves are among the most popular. In nature, the Caladium grows in the shade of tropical forests, where its light leaf surfaces act like little light catchers. In English it is also known as Elephant Ear because of the shape of its leaves.
