Why does the Monstera have holes in its leaves? Botanists believe that in the rainforest the slits let wind and rain through and allow light to reach the lower leaves. The epithet "deliciosa" comes from the fruit: when ripe, it tastes of pineapple and banana, hence its nickname, the fruit salad plant.
