What looks like a single bloom on a hydrangea is usually a ring of showy flowers: sterile bracts meant to attract insects. The actual, tiny flowers sit in between. The garden hydrangea is native to East Asia; in Japan, it belongs to the rainy season in June the way cherry blossom belongs to spring.
